People search “royalty free music” when they need a track for a video, stream, podcast or game and do not want a surprise bill later. The phrase is easy to misread.
Royalty free ≠ free
Royalty free means you do not pay a fee every time the music is played or viewed. You usually still pay once — a subscription or a one-track licence — unless the source says the music is free.
Free royalty free music skips the up-front fee too. That is what ships from Bay Zero: 366 Self Releases by Purrple Cat under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0.
How the labels compare
| Label | Up-front cost | Per-play fee | Credit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Royalty free (paid) | Often yes | No | Depends |
| Free royalty free / CC BY | No | No | Yes |
| Copyright free / CC0 | No | No | No |
| Rights-managed | Yes | Often yes | Varies |
What CC BY 4.0 asks for
Credit the artist, link the licence, and say if you changed the work. Commercial use is allowed. Re-uploading the music to Spotify or Apple Music is not — that triggers false Content ID claims.
